I had heard a lot about this technique and when Steve Raichlen came out with his Beer Can Chicken cookbook, I figured it was time.  All of his recipes use the liquid you dump out of the can in either the marinade or the sauce.  This particular version used lemonade and had lemonade powder in the rub.  It's one of the best grilled chickens I've ever made.
